The Mazda MX-5 (also referred to as the Miata in North America and as the Roadster in Japan) is quickly becoming a modern classic. Essentially Mazda have re-invented the concept of the lightweight roadster and the front engine rear wheel drive lightweight design hearkens back to the glory days of small, lightweight British roadsters such as the Jensen Interceptor, Jaguar E-Type, Triumph Spitfire and the Lotus Elan. The Mazda MX-5 was first introduced in 1989 and and immediately revolutionised the motor industry. At the time the automotive trade was packed full of boring saloons, bland "hot" hatchbacks, chunky 4x4 "Chelsea tractors" and a whole slew of city cars and superminis completely devoid of any personality. Many argued that the MX-5 would fail and that the lightweight, affordable roadster had been and gone for a reason but Mazda stuck to their guns and the MX-5 quickly became one of the best selling sports vehicles of all time.

There are currently three generations of the Mazda MX-5 in existence and Mazda have resisted the urge to alter a design that proved so successful when it was first released. Apart from some minor aesthetic changes and some technological updates and refinements the Mk 1 and Mk 2 versions are very similar to the newer Mk 3, and a Mk 4 is currently being produced that will no doubt help cement the Mazda MX-5's place in the history books.
